sniff的基本意思是“闻,嗅”,指将鼻子贴近某人或某物,通过嗅觉器官来对其进行判断,可以表示“嗅”的动作,也可以表示“嗅出”的结果。引申可指“喘粗气”“觉察到”。
sniff可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时,后接名词或代词作宾语,有时还可以接以形容词充当补足语的复合宾语。
sniff可以引出直接引语,意思是“哼了一声说道”。
