all用作形容词的基本意思是“所有的,全部的”,指两种情况:一是表示概括起来考虑的全体,此时与不可数名词或单数形式的可数名词连用; 二是表示把各部分一个一个地来看的全体,此时与复数形式的名词连用。

all 与名词连用时,在名词前可使用the〔this, that, those〕或所有格等限定词,若与复数形式的名词连用,名词前也可用基数词。

all 与 not 连用有两种含意:一为“并非…都是”; 二为“即使全部的…也不”。

与such,other等限定词连用时,all应置于其前。

all用作形容词时不用于比较等级。

pron.(代词)

all用作代词的基本意思是“全部”“一切”,接动词单数形式时是 all things,表示“事物”,接动词复数形式时是 all people,表示“人”。

在all和一个限定词之间可以加of,这种用法在美式英语中比在英式英语中更普遍, all of后面的名词一般都有冠词、名词所有格或其他修饰成分来限制。此外,在人称代词之前只能用all of,不能用all,且人称代词要用宾格。

all用作主语的同位语时，其位置通常在实义动词之前，非实义动词之后；若非实义动词位于句尾，则all应放在该非实义动词之前。

all 接关系从句时,常省略that,可理解为“每件事物”或“唯一的事物”。

adv.(副词)

all用作副词时不用于比较等级。

all用作副词的基本意思是“完全地,很”,在句中起加强语气的作用,当all的意思相当于very,即作“很,非常”解时,多用于口语中。

all the...常有如下两种用法:①用作副词短语,对形容词和副词比较级加以强调,意为“更加,甚至”; 有时整个结构相当于该形容词的最高级,意为“最,顶多”。②(all) the better (for)意思是“却更,反而更好”。

all表示人时，用复数。

all表示事态，总量或抽象概念时，用单数。
