attend的本意是指心里经常性地想着〔做〕某事,现代英语中主要用于表示“参加(会议、集会、典礼、婚礼、追悼会等)”,有时也指上学、听课、听报告等。它强调的是动作,即听或看,为正式书面用语。

attend作“专心,注意”解时,多指对书本、图表、课业、命令、事物、事件等的注意。其后常接to。

attend还可表示“伴随”,含“照顾”“陪伴”的意思,陪伴者处于从属地位,有时表示一种服务或礼貌、殷勤,有时表示跟在人或事物的后面而行。作“照顾”解时,主要指专职工作性质的照顾。

attend用作及物动词时接简单宾语,可用于被动结构。用于不及物动词时可接介词to表示“致力于”“注意”“照顾”,接介词on表示“照顾”“伴随”。

attend和attend at均表示“出席于……”的意思，不过习惯上更偏向于使用attend；

attend和attend upon(on)均表示“照料，伺候”的意思，但是在特指医生或护士的照料时，习惯上常用attend；

attend to表示“注意于”的意思。
